We are a locally owned birdwatching travel specialist backed by Best of Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. Our team brings together destination knowledge and experienced birding guides to create Bird watching tours in Sri Lanka that suit your target species, travel dates and preferred pace.
Rather than fitting every guest into the same schedule, we consider what you most want from your holiday. You may wish to concentrate on endemic birds, spend longer identifying wetland species, or allow additional time for photography. We plan routes and accommodation around those priorities, with early starts where useful and time to listen, observe and enjoy each location.
Your itinerary can connect the rainforests of Sinharaja and Kitulgala with the highlands around Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. Alternatively, explore bird-rich landscapes around Sigiriya, Wilpattu, Bundala, Kumana or Mannar, depending on the season and your interests.
Our Bird watching tours in Sri Lanka welcome experienced birders, enthusiastic beginners, photographers, couples and private groups. Throughout your journey, we encourage considerate observation and respect for birds, nesting sites and their habitats.

Sri Lanka’s birdlife reflects the remarkable variety of its landscapes. Lowland rainforests, misty mountain forests, dry-zone woodland, coastal lagoons and village reservoirs support an appealing mix of endemic, resident and seasonal migratory birds. For travellers planning bird watching tours in Sri Lanka, exploring several of these habitats offers a richer experience than visiting a single location.
The island’s endemic birds are a particular attraction. Species such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie, Sri Lanka junglefowl, Sri Lanka hanging parrot, Layard’s parakeet, yellow-fronted barbet and Sri Lanka grey hornbill bring colour and character to a birdwatching journey. More elusive birds, including the Serendib scops owl, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka scaly thrush, reward patient observation and knowledgeable local guidance.
Sinharaja Rainforest is an important destination for endemic forest birds and mixed-species feeding flocks. Look for red-faced malkohas, Sri Lanka crested drongos, ashy-headed laughingthrushes and Sri Lanka blue magpies among its birding highlights. Kitulgala’s Makandawa Forest Reserve, Bodhinagala Forest Reserve and Kanneliya Rainforest provide further opportunities to explore wet-zone habitats.
In the central highlands, Horton Plains and the forests around Nuwara Eliya introduce a different selection of birds. Dull-blue flycatchers, Sri Lanka hill white-eyes and yellow-eared bulbuls are among the species to look for, while the secretive Sri Lanka whistling thrush is a sought-after highland speciality.
For wetland birdwatching, Bundala National Park, Kumana National Park, Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, Anawilundawa and Talangama Wetland offer varied combinations of lagoons, marshes, tanks and surrounding vegetation. Depending on the location and season, you may encounter painted storks, Asian openbills, spot-billed pelicans, Eurasian spoonbills, herons, egrets, kingfishers and cormorants. During the migratory season, ducks, sandpipers, plovers and other visitors add to the diversity. Mannar and its surrounding coastal wetlands are also rewarding, with opportunities to observe migratory shorebirds and greater flamingos when conditions are suitable.
Dry-zone destinations such as Sigiriya, Wilpattu, Yala, Udawalawe, Minneriya and Wasgamuwa add woodland birds, raptors and waterbirds to the experience. Exploring these landscapes can also bring encounters with Sri Lanka’s larger mammals.
Our bird watching tours in Sri Lanka connect these destinations according to your interests and travel dates, allowing time to appreciate bird behaviour, calls and habitats. Whether your priority is endemic species, wetland birds or photography, each journey offers a different perspective on the birds of Sri Lanka.
More About Birds of Sri LankaOur tour started at Wilpattu Safari Camp, which is brilliantly run by owner Namal who knows all about the wildlife in the park and caters for keen photographers. Next onto Habarana and The Other Corner provided very good accommodation adjacent a beautiful lake full of birdlife. TOC has a resident naturalist, Dhilip, who took us birdwatching in the resort surrounds.
We very much enjoyed Bundala NP, great for birdwatching and spotting elephants in a very quiet park.
Overall a great experience and we highly recommend Best of Lanka.
